SAMPLING DESIGN
Frost occurrence is documented and when it is present the depth is measured. Frost data are collected near the standard rain gage openings that are designated as snow course sites and are numbered according to the rain gage.
The presence or absence of frost in the ground is checked at two points adjacent to each snow course point by probing with a ski pole. The percentage of total probe locations having frost is recorded for each snow course. At the first two snow points that have frost, a hole is dug into the soil and the depth of the frost is measured and recorded. The two depths are averaged. Frost data are summarized in the file called frost annually. Stations 2 and 17 are summarized from 1956 to the present because they have the longest continuous record and are representative of mid-elevation south-facing and high-elevation north-facing slopes. Summarized data for stations 9, 19 and HQ begins in 1994 in frost. This file gives the % of points having frost, and the average frost depth in inches. Notes on miscellaneous frost measurements are included. Prior to 1970 frost measurement was sporatic and the general impression was that there was none. Data for these years should be used with caution. The number of frost points sampled has also varied over the years, so we give the data as percent and average depth.
Frost data are collected weekly at snow course sites during the winter months. Frost occurrence is documented and when it is present the depth is measured.

DATA ACCESS GUIDELINES
Publications using these data from the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study must include the following paragraph: Some data used in this publication were obtained by scientists of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study; this publication has not been reviewed by those scientists. The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest is operated and maintained by the Northeastern Research Station, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Please note that data sharing and availability policy varies among the datasets available. Publishers of Hubbard Brook data are encouraged to contact the original data provider to obtain information for an acknowledgement of the original funding source of the research.
The access to all LTER data is subject to requirements set forth by this policy document to enable data providers to track usage, evaluate its impact in the community, and confirm users' acceptance of the terms of acceptable use. These requirements are standardized across the LTER Network to provide contractual exchange of data between Site Data Providers, Network Data Providers, and Data Users that can be encoded into electronic form and exchanged between computers. This will allow direct access to data via a common portal once these requirements have been fulfilled. The following information may be required directly or by proxy prior to the transference of any data object:
