|---|---|---|
This bryozoan, also known as a "moss animal" is actually a colony of small animals known as zooids. The colonies in Mirror Lake grow to the size of a human head! They eat whatever floats by with the little "fingers" you can actually see in the associated link. In the winter the colonies die back, and reappear in the spring.
Fresh water sponges are found in clean lakes, streams rivers and ponds. Sponges can produce both egg and sperm to make more sponges. Sponges are mostly confused with algae because of its green , brown, gray and yellowish coloration. Their color is from algae that live with them in a symbiotic relationship. (Reagan and Grady, grade 6) Snails can basically live anywhere. They belong to a large group called Mollusks. All mollusks have soft bodies, so, it helps to have a shell. They live near riverbanks and in the water. Some snails even live on land. Most snails that live on land like damp and wet places. Some snails live a long time and some snails live a short time but no longer than 15 years. A snail's daily meal is plants, bacteria, and things like that. Snails always have to worry about predators like birds, raccoons and fish. Snails are a cool part of nature. (Amanda and Casey, grade 6) |
Caddis flies are very interesting insects. Caddis fly larvae make houses for themselves by spinning silk around sticks and debris found on lake and river bottoms. Caddis flies are 5-20mm long. Most caddis flies are herbivores but some eat other animals. Caddis flies live around a month and a half. They like to live in quiet running water but are also common in fast flowing streams. They are eaten by fish, especially trout. Caddis flies are closely related to moths and butterflies. (Peter and Welles, grade 6)
The smallmouth bass is a sunfish. The record for a smallmouth is 27 inches. It weighed 12 pounds and was caught in Tennessee. A five pound smallmouth would be a whopper in New Hampshire! How long does it live? Well, it depends if they get caught by a fishermen or not! The smallmouth bass fits into the ecology by helping parasites get from place to place, among other things. In the Mirror Lake food web they are near the top. (Veronica, Nat, grade 6)
The green frog is about 7.5 to 12.5 cm. The voice of the green frog sounds like loose banjo strings. It is found in eastern North America in swamps, brooks, the the edges of ponds and lakes. Adult green frogs look a lot like bullfrogs but are smaller. Their predators are bigger frogs, turtles, snakes, herons, raccoons, otters, minks and humans. The green frog's favorite prey is insects, slugs, snails, crayfish, spiders, small snakes, and frogs. (Nick and Sammy, grade 6)
