The Glaciers

  • About 2 million years ago a slow but steadily moving mile high river of ice eventually made its way to where Mirror Lake would someday be. As these glaciers moved southward, they brought with them a climate that impacted the existing forests long before the glaciers actually arrived. Everything was pushed aside and the land was scratched and thoroughly scoured .
  • It is hard to image the scene around Mirror Lake during this time. The entire state of New Hampshire was to be covered in a blanket of ice that in some places was a mile thick. Even the present day 6,288 foot peak of Mount Washington was covered over in snow and ice.
  • About 14- 30,000 years ago the glaciers had all but retreated northward. A big piece of ice, buried deep in the sediment, was all that was left of the once mighty glaciers. When this ice melted around 14,000 years ago, it left a depression. This depression, filled with the water from the melting ice, was the beginning of Mirror Lake.
How does water enter and leave Mirror Lake?

Water enters Mirror Lake in one of three ways. 1. As rain and snow falling directly into the lake 2. As runoff 3. From underground springs. Much of the water arrives via three streams called Northwest, West, and Northeast. However, there is evidence to suggest that 15-20% of the lake's water is from under the ground. One study that used water filled balloons attached to sawed off sections of steel drums revealed that there are specific places that water enters and leaves through the bottom of Mirror Lake. The water filled balloons were attached to the drum sections and would either continue to fill, or empty, depending on whether water was entering or leaving at that point.

This is where water is measured coming into Mirror Lake at "West" on the map on the left.
