When you look at the wooded hill slopes you may be surprised to know that the forest you see has been cut-over at least 3x in the past 200 years, and much of the this area was actually cow and sheep pasture. Here we have a stand of large White pine planted in the 1930s by the CCC. Notice the smooth surface of the ground and the lack of large rocks and boulders in this area. This stand was a cow pasture in the 1920s.
