Sapling allometry from 
Watershed 1:

 
        In the summer of 1998, we opportunistically collected saplings of striped maple and beech in order to develop allometric biomass equations.  Saplings with a range of basal diameters were collected from two elevation ranges to get a sample representative of the entire watershed.  Height and diameters were measured in the field, the saplings were dismantled (into bole, live branches, dead branches, and leaves), and the component parts dried and weighed.  Log-log graphs were plotted for different biomass components and regression equations developed to estimate biomass from basal diameter (see graphs below).  The original data are also included below.
