What is this project about?
The purpose of this project is to ascertain the worst and best years of forest growth of the Northern Hardwood forest at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire for two time periods: a broad period, 1900-1999, and a more narrow period, 1963-present, which specifically encompasses the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study.  The Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study has made extensive and detailed assessments of hydrological and geochemical dynamics of small watershed ecosystems. However, there has been no effort to determine the years of extremely good and extremely poor growth over the HBES interval. In our assessment of the entire period from 1900 to 2000, the worst years were 1911, 1923, 1936, 1948, 1953, and 1962, which is the only year within the study interval with very poor growth.
