This is a 1994 aerial view of the south-facing watersheds in the Hubbard Brook valley. Most of the watersheds are clearly discernible because of their different harvesting histories. Watershed 6 has not been cut since the whole area was logged in the early 1900s, so it is indistinguishable from the area to the west. The stream draining W6 is indicated by the arrow. W5 was clearcut (whole-tree harvested) in 1983-1984, and some of the skid roads are still visible. W4 was harvested in alternating 25 m wide strips in a series of three cuttings in 1970, 1972 and 1974. W1 has not been cut recently but was treated with a calcium addition in the fall of 1999. W2 was cut in 1966, herbicided for three years, then allowed to recover after 1969.
The circular patches within each watershed are numbered "rain gauge" clearings maintained for meteorological data collection. The three clearings on W6 are labeled as RG 9, RG 10, and RG 11. Dark areas are conifer-dominated forests on the north-facing slopes in the Hubbard Brook valley and, at the top of the photo, in the valley to the north.
