Then we begin to dig down through the Oa, leaving a pedestal
of undisturbed soil beneath the template. We keep the sides straight
by slicing straight down with a flat trowel, and then scoop the soil away
with a garden trowel. Roots are cut off with garden pruners where
they exit the pedestal.
