We continue digging until we reach mineral soil or rock
on all four sides of the pedestal. This sample is actually very shallow.
Some organic soils, and therefore the pedestals, are 20 to 30 cm deep.
Next we cut beneath the pedestal, through the mineral soil so as not to
disturb the organic soil above it, and free the block.
